Chapter 6 – Council of the Fang The wolves gathered in a ring beneath the moon. Their shapes slid between the trees like shadows, eyes glinting gold in the dark. The air was thick with the smell of pine and fur. Excalibur stepped into the center with Sly Fox and Clever Hare at his side, the silver feather clutched tight in his paws. “The king’s men stole my boy, Arthur,” he said, voice quivering but clear. “I mean to bring him home. I ask for your help.” Kind Wolf lowered her head, her voice gentle as a sigh. “Little one… my heart grieves for you. But our duty is to the forest and our own kind.” “They burned our burrows, hunted our kin" said Clever Hare. “The king will not stop at your borders.” Grim Wolf stepped forward, his shoulders heavy as stone. “Then we will endure, as we always have. Why risk the pack for one child of man?” Sly Fox’s tail lashed. “Because the destruction will not stop unless someone steps up. If you wait, it will reach you too.” Growls rippled through the circle. Some wolves paced, others lowered their heads, ears pinned back in unease. Excalibur’s whiskers twitched. His paws shook, but he lifted his chin. “I am small, but I will not leave him. If I must go alone, I will. But I ask you—stand with me, for every creature the king has harmed.” The clearing filled with voices, some sharp, some weary, all doubtful. At last Proud Wolf stepped beside Excalibur, his stance tall. “He speaks truth,” he said, “but my strength alone is not enough. This must be the will of the pack.” Kind Wolf’s ears drooped, her gaze full of sorrow. “Forgive me… but my vote is no.” One by one, others echoed her. The ring leaned toward refusal. Excalibur’s shoulders sagged, the silver feather dipping in his grasp. From the far edge of the circle, a single wolf rose. His eyes were hard as stone, his voice cutting through the night. “Enough.” The murmurs fell silent. “These cowards forget what they are,” the wolf said. “We are guardians of this forest.”
