We came into the world without a single clue, The sun behind the glass painted the light anew. We reached out with our hands to everything we found, And learned to tell the night from daylight all around. We crawled along the path, exploring every space, We fell, we laughed, we rose to run another race. We didn't know the anxiety and deep despair, Nor that a fight for life was waiting for us there. Back then the whole wide world seemed endless and supreme, And time was just a far and unfamiliar dream. We didn't know that life is not eternity, And every passing day becomes a memory. Dawn, day, evening, and night, Four, then two, and later β€” three! All our lives we walk somewhere ahead, Without knowing where the path will lead! Dawn, day, evening, and night, Days and years and life just fade away. Thinking that we still have plenty of time, When time has no return and cannot stay! And now upon two feet we firmly stand at last, As masters of our fate and judges of our past. While some are chasing gold and riches made of stone, Some need a noisy crowd to never be alone. Some trade their precious days for wild and loud design, Some drown their quiet nights in heavy cups of wine. Some swallow bitter insults year by heavy year, While unextinguished rage keeps burning cold and clear. For some it's paramount to always be the first, For others β€” that their neighbor suffers from the worst. And when somebody comes to ask a helping hand β€” We simply turn away, too blind to understand. We have the strength, we have the freedom in our chest, It feels as though this life will never be at rest. But while we put off everything until it's late, Unnoticed, step by step, we walk toward our fate. And then the sun descends much lower to the ground, Our steps begin to slow, without a heavy sound. The third supporting stick is waiting in our hand, While memories lead us back into a distant land. And suddenly we see how many days have flown, How many unspoken words were never made or known. So many people there we could have held so near, Yet they were not the ones we chased through every year. And maybe in the end the point is not at all About who's right or wrong, or who was bound to fall. For everyone possesses a journey of their own, And chooses every path they walk upon alone.
