**[Spoken Intro – Light Banjo Tick]** From the day he learned to talk, I knew the Lord was testin’ me. **[Pause]** Here’s a good example. **[Verse 1 – Quick, Playful Storytelling]** I get a chuckle from that boy of mine From the day he was born to this very time He says the damnedest things in the funniest way And somehow finds a new one nearly every day He makes me question all my parenting skills Then flashes that grin while he’s testing my will Take this one time maybe you’ll laugh It happened at his Christian school, in front of the staff **[Music Stops]** Nah MAN… Not The Christian school. **[Chorus]** I get a chuckle from that boy of mine He’ll cross every line, then explain it just fine Honest to a fault, got an answer every time Lord, give me patience for that boy of mine **(Ooo-ooo… this is a bad sign)** **[Verse 2 ]** I went to pick him up at the end of the day The playground was fenced, but I watched them play All the kids were yelling and running in the sun Then a little boy came crying, headed on the run Straight to the teacher with tears in his eyes “Rett pushed me down the slide!” he loudly cried My boy walked over with nowhere to hide Wearing guilt like a billboard ten feet wide “Is that true, Rett? Did you push him today?” She asked him real sweet in her teacherly way He looked at the ground, then lifted his chin And told her exactly where the trouble had been **[Band Drops Out]** “Yes, ma’am, I did! He wouldn’t let me pass! I waited, but he was being a candy ass!” **[Dead Silence]** “So I pushed him on down, and that’s what I did! Then the crybaby ran—so that’s why I hid!” **[Single Banjo Pluck]** Well… At least he was honest. **[Bridge]** I made it through the classroom and back to that spot The look that teacher gave me said I was in it hot I said, “Rett, apologize—you know that wasn’t right” He crossed his little arms and prepared himself to fight “Why should I say sorry Dad? You say that all the time You called that man the same thing this morning in the car line” **[Band Stops /slight Pause]** I felt every eye turn slowly my way And knew there’d be no saving either of us that day **[Final Chorus]** I get a chuckle from that boy of mine He’ll repeat every word at the worst possible time Honest to a fault, got an answer every time Lord, help me watch this mouth of mine **(Ooo-ooo… I'm sure it'll be fine)** **[Outro ]** I said, “Son, apologize—that’s nothing you should say” But the school had reached its limit by the ending of the day We both learned a valued lesson in a very public way **[Music Stops]** Be careful what you teach ’em… ’Cause we both got expelled that day! **[Spoken]** Sometimes it takes a while before a daddy finds it funny. But you did say it, Dad! **[Final Banjo Pluck]** Boy… get in the truck.
