A Million Ducks
[Intro] [Two bars; clean guitar only] [Verse 1] [Half-time drums; close, dry, melodic lead; wry and understated] She wanted Avatar. I'd seen it enough to turn blue. I'd have bailed on anything. I've bailed on a drive-in too. She was somewhere behind her face and I was somewhere behind mine. Twenty minutes in I got up (I'll be right back), and I meant it at the time. [Pre-Chorus] [Melodic lead; tension rising] Out in the lobby by the popcorn there's a light I can't get past, a claw machine of rubber ducks with their faces to the glass, a dollar a play, and a sign that I took as a sign: [Break] [One beat; full band stops] [Chorus] [Belted melody; wide guitars; driving drums] It won't let you lose! It won't let you lose! Put your money in and play until you win. It won't let you lose! It won't let you lose! So I never went back in. (I never went back in.) [Verse 2] [Half-time drums; close melodic lead; smile giving way to regret] A pirate one, a captain one, and a dog who knows he's not a duck, filled my pockets, filled my hood, and carried the rest in a hug. The credits rolled, the doors swung open, blue light in her hair, and I looked like a million ducks. She looked right at me. I can't remember what was there. (I remember every duck.) [Break] [One beat; full band stops] [Chorus] [Belted melody; wide guitars; rueful delivery] It won't let you lose! It won't let you lose! Put your money in and play until you win. It won't let you lose! It won't let you lose! So I never went back in. (I never went back in.) [Bridge] [One clean guitar; intimate melodic lead; unhurried] Different girl. Different year. Eleven out of ten, undeserved. Something bad at home she carried, and I never asked a word. Later I tried to figure her out (I'll take the benefit of the doubt) and I found her in some pictures that I'm not gonna talk about. [Build] [Clean guitar; restrained melodic lead] Red dress. My mirror. And guess what's behind her, smug and out of place? [Drums enter softly; gradual instrumental crescendo] Every duck I ever won. My room. Her face. Strangers have seen my dresser. Nobody knows whose room. Nobody but me. (And every duck.) Where the hell was I? [Break] [One beat; full band stops] [Final Chorus] [Biggest full-band lift; belted melody with natural vocal cracks] It won't let you lose! It won't let you lose! I only won the one I couldn't lose. It won't let you lose! It won't let you lose! So I never went back in. (I never went back in.) (I'll be right back.) [Outro] [Bare, dry, close-mic; same male lead softly sings] They're still up on the dresser. They still don't know what they saw. I kept one picture. Of my condo. Next time I'm staying in the movie. [Break] [One beat of silence] Even if it's Avatar. [End] [Cold stop after the complete final word]
