As a Boy I had a kingdom made of red clay mud, With a Tonka truck and a heart like a flood. I was a dirt-caked king on a tricycle throne, Just a-dreaming of a stallion to call my own. I wanted a coat as black as the midnight sky, To gallop through the hollers and make the dust fly. ________________________________________ [The Big Switch] But then she walked by, all sundress and curls, The kind of vision that changes a young boy’s world. Suddenly a pony seemed a little bit slow, I needed something with a rumble and a chrome-plated glow. I traded that dream of a four-legged ride, For a dually with a bench seat and her by my side. A pitch-black Chevy, with dually's in the rear. A 454 that could shift every gear. Four on the floor, making gravel scream. Just to be the man of that young girl's dream. ________________________________________ We were rolling like thunder, feeling ten feet tall, Until I pulled up to the pump at the local Sinclair stall. The numbers on the pump started climbing out of sight, And my wallet started sweating in the middle of the night. That big block engine’s got a thirsty kind of soul, And I’m burning up my paycheck just to stay on a roll. ________________________________________ [The Full Circle] So hey there, pretty lady, don't you look so shocked, But the dually’s in the driveway and the wheels are all locked. I’m headed back to the pasture, back to the start, To find a one-horsepower beauty with a beating heart. She doesn’t need high-test, she just needs some hay, And we’ll ride that black stallion into the sunset today. ________________________________________ Now she’s staring at the saddle, then back at the truck, Thinking her big-country boyfriend has run out of luck. She said, "Where’s the AC and the sliding back glass?" I said, "Honey, this engine runs on water and grass!" ________________________________________ [The Bridge] The dually's for sale, yeah, it’s parked on the lawn, With a "For Sale" sign posted just before dawn. The Girl swapped out her heels for some dusty old boots, Getting back to our country-fried, dirt-digging roots. Now we’re moving slow, but we’re feeling just fine, At zero miles per gallon and a whole lot of shine. ________________________________________ I checked for a code when he started to sputter. Turns out he just wanted some oats and some water. No "Check Engine" light on this black-coated frame. Just a flick of the switch when a horsefly came. [The Final Chorus] So goodbye to the pistons and the four-barrel whine... I’ve got a one-horsepower beauty and a girl who is mine.... No more crying at the pump or the price of the lead, Just the sound of the hooves and the blue sky overhead. Now I’m back in the mud where I started as a boy, With a black-coated stallion and a heart full of joy. And I still got the Girl right by my side,...yee haw
