The Ladder in the Flood

V6

THE LADDER IN THE FLOOD (Mono: muted guitar, rain against tin, and one breath circling behind the listener.) [Verse I] I was born with a map drawn wrong in my pocket, where the river wore shoes and the road learned to drown. Mama said, “Son, every lock has a prophet,” but I carried my key like a nail through the town. There was a man at the crossing selling halos, two for a dollar, with the rust painted gold. I bought one to hide what the mirror kept saying— you can polish your fear, but it still leaves you cold. (Warm bass enters beneath a swung rim-click; guitar skanks open the groove.) [Pre-Chorus] Every wound was a window I boarded from view, every board was a lesson the weather broke through. I kept asking the thunder, “What did I do?” It said, “Nothing is happening only to you.” [Chorus] So I climbed through the flood on a ladder of losses, each rung was a name I was scared to forgive. At the top there was no crown, no choir, no promise— just a voice in my chest saying, “Choose now to live.” Oh, the fire did not spare me; it taught me my shape. The night told the truth, then it showed me the gate. I thought growing wings meant escaping the ache; transcendence was loving what pain couldn’t take. (Stereo blooms; melodica rises left, brass answers right, and dub echoes fall upward.) [Verse II] I married my anger in a room without witnesses, fed it my hours and called it my friend. It spoke in my voice with remarkable tenderness: “If you never begin, you can never badly end.” Then a child on the bus drew a sun on the window: “Mister, look—it still follows wherever we go.” All my wisdom was smoke making ghosts on the ceiling; all her truth fit inside one bright circle of gold. (Hand drums gather; bamboo knocks become tuned percussion as the bass begins to climb.) [Confessional Rise] I blamed every blade, never questioned the grip, called the fall an abyss, never looked at the cliff. Had a mouth full of mercy, revenge on my lip, wore a saint on my shirt with a war in the stitch. Being right built a prison and named it protection; I served as the jailer, the lock, the correction. When I finally forgave what I couldn’t forget, every chain became a rung and I started to step. (First drop: cathedral-wide sub, syncopated wubs, brass, skank guitar, and live drums.) [Bridge] Down in the well, I discovered the sky. Under the answer, I buried the why. I begged for a miracle, certain I’d know it; it came as the courage to finally be quiet. “The bell must be hollow or no bell can ring. The seed splits apart, but it still becomes spring.” Some endings are entrances seen from beneath; some graves are the places we bury our grief. (Thunder becomes harmony; water droplets stretch into a choir as the pulse rises overhead.) [Final Chorus] We climb through the flood on a ladder of losses, each rung is a name we are learning to give. There’s no crown at the top, just the breath that is in us— a voice in the chest saying, “Choose now to live.” Let the fire come near; let it teach us our shape. Let the night speak its truth; we can still choose the gate. We thought growing wings meant escaping the ache; transcendence is loving what pain could not take. (Final drop: colossal and radiant; bass, melodic wubs, brass, melodica, skank guitar, and voices orbit in cathedral-scale space.) [Outro] The flood keeps the footprints. The ladder keeps none. The bell gives its emptiness. The seed gives the sun. I was never becoming somebody above— I was learning that rising is another word for love. (Rain, one bass harmonic, and a final breath cross center before dissolving into morning birds.)
