[Verse 1] Beneath the bakery crate Beneath the busted drain It learned the names we hide From the morning train It scratches on the pipe With a knuckle made of bone When the tramline shakes at night It is never alone [Pre-Chorus] Hear that hollow thump? That ain't the ground Something big and patient Moves around It knows your little heart It knows your door If you hear it calling once Don't answer anymore [Chorus] Down under the city Something's awake Down under the city It waits for a break It knows my name It knows my fear Down under the city It drags us near [Verse 2] Behind the floodwall rust Past the dead-end steam There’s a room of old teeth In a black water dream It wears a thousand eyes In the sheen of grime Every time we think we're safe It gets one step in time [Pre-Chorus] Hear that hollow thump? That ain't the ground Something big and patient Moves around It tastes the rain above It drinks the dark If you hear it breathing close You'll never find the spark [Chorus] Down under the city Something's awake Down under the city It waits for a break It knows my name It knows my fear Down under the city It drags us near [Bridge] When the sirens fade And the windows blur It comes up slow Like a buried curse I saw its mouth In the manhole shine Smiling wide Is it finally my time [Final Chorus] Down under the city Something's awake Down under the city It waits for a break It knows my name It knows my fear Down under the city It drags us near Down under the city Don't let it rise Down under the city Keep shut your eyes It knows my name It knows my fear Down under the city It drags us near
