Now I Can Quit Without Being a Quitter
I've never been the kind to quit, When things get hard, I see them through. If there's a bridge that needs rebuilding, I'll do what I can do. I've always thought that loving someone Meant you never walked away. So I kept showing up and giving, Believing love would find a way. For seventeen years I kept trying, Through the laughter and the tears. I gave my heart, my time, my energy, I hoped we'd have so many more good years. My love didn't always hit the mark, But I kept giving everything I could. I never dreamed that all that trying Would end with such a broken heart. I knew how much I'd given, I knew how hard I'd tried. But knowing I'd done all I could Didn't stop the hurt inside. For nearly a year I carried The pain of what we'd lost. I never regretted all of the trying But I grieved the emotional cost. Then somewhere in the music, As I sang the hurt away, I began to see the breaking In a very different way. Maybe your forced ending Was an unexpected gift to me. I'll never quit on loving you— But your exit set me free. I can now quit without being a quitter, I can stop without giving up. I didn't run out of patience, I didn't run out of love. You made the choice to walk away, A choice I never could have made. I would have kept reaching for the dream Even when you continued to push me away. I didn't quit loving you— But I was finally free to quit trying. I didn't realize how much energy it was taking To keep trying... Day after day, Week after week, Month after month... To belong. Until I finally felt the freedom Of no longer holding on. The breaking didn't change me, Or the love I have to give. It changed what I was responsible for, And how I choose to live. Now I can quit without being a quitter That brought a peace I never knew. I don't have to keep on reaching For those who won't reach toward me, too. At sixty-three, I'm finally learning I can care for myself, too. My love remains, there's no denying— But now I'm finally free to quit trying. I can still be someone who gives, And love with all my heart. But I don't have to carry What was never just my part. I didn't quit loving— But I am finally free to quit trying.
