The song came from small memories that stayed with me. flowers on the table, wool beside her chair, the way she made every room softer, and the way my father kept a candle lit for her after she was gone. I sampled a guitar recording I played myself and used the new Voice feature for the vocals, although my Aussie accent turns a little British in places. At its heart, this song is about grief, love, and the quiet things that keep someone close after they leave. The flowers are still on the table. βββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ There were flowers On the table There were flowers on the table And wool beside your chair Your hands were always making things For somebody to wear You still found a way to smile On days that wore you down And every room felt softer Any time you were around You made the hard feel smaller Like that was just your way I only know now what it took To do that every day So I'll tend the flowers The way you used to do Turn them to the morning light The way I learned from you The flowers on the table Still hold you in the room And all the love you gave away Still lives in what you grew After you were gone my father Lit a candle every night While everybody talked of what was left He brought your flowers inside Your chair stayed by the window Your basket where it was And every flower on the table Made it hard to say you're gone At the viewing I held your cold hands Everyone was scared to go in But your face looked soft and peaceful Like the pain was over then After all those years without him You did not look alone There was something in that stillness That felt kinder than goodbye So I'll tend the flowers The way you used to do My father keeps them by the window And I still learn from you The flowers on the table Still hold you in the room And all the love you gave away Still lives in what you grew There are flowers on the table And light comes through the glass Sometimes when I turn them It feels like you're still here βββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
