The Raven Knows (Théâtre des Vampires)

THE RAVEN KNOWS [Cold open—one raven croak; fixed tagelharpa motif; distant James River against wooden pilings; no drums] [Male spoken—dry, close, controlled, slightly unsteady] One bitter drop. The flame leaned sideways. [Bowed upright bass bends down] Then the wall breathed. [Verse 1—dry close vocal; slow steady frame drum; bowed bass bends] The yellow flame thinned as the stone leaned back, Fresh mortar spread through a doorway crack. My boot found a stair that curved both ways— Down through the years, up through the haze. I knew that rail from a boyhood hand, But not the light, or the room where I stand. One step lower—the window rose. I turned behind me— [Sudden silence] The staircase closed. [Frame drum and bowed bass return abruptly, louder] One wall rounded, the next went straight. One held a room that was built too late. Below, white lines crossed gravel and stone. Above, black wings waited alone. [Fixed tagelharpa motif] I couldn’t tell which year I chose— But the raven knows. [Instrumental—fixed tagelharpa motif; drifting bowed bass] [Verse 2—closer rising vocal; hollow wood percussion and low sub enter] Across the yard, the windows burned Green, then red, as the shadows turned. Sickly gold filled every pane— Too cold for oil, too still for flame. The James struck wood beneath my feet, Then widened somewhere dark and deep. River against pilings, river against stone— Then surf behind a door with no home. [Irregular heartbeat enters; occasional double and missing hits] Inside, my pulse came back through the floor, Each hollow board returned it once more. A bright eye caught in a narrow seam; Manicured claws scratched— Then changed the dream. [Bowed upright bass scrapes and bends] The flame threw time across the wall, A blade-shaped shadow rose to fall. No clock above. No pit below. something measuring where I could go. I couldn’t tell what moved below— [Fixed tagelharpa motif] But the raven knows. [Instrumental—bells merge with heartbeat; fixed tagelharpa motif; distant raven] [Verse 3—strained uneven vocal; frame drum surges, then thins] The bare yard flowered beneath my tread. A fountain ran through stone still dead. Flames in lanterns burned without smoke. Strangers passed as the morning broke. They spoke my name like I wasn’t there. They read blank pages into the air. Under three arches, a pale face stared— My eyes. My mouth. But no breath there. A stranger’s red kiss marked its cheek. Coins and flowers lay at its feet. The raven perched above the shrine, Still wearing feathers untouched by time. [Percussion stops] Behind loose stone lay a little gold heart, A chain through dust, one hinge apart. I opened it looking for somebody’s hair— [Deep sub-bass swells] Mine lay curled like I’d left it there. [Heartbeat stops] A gift not given. A year not lived. A room not built. A grave not filled. I almost understood before the vision closed— [Fixed tagelharpa motif] What the raven knows. [Bridge—distant echoed vocal; no drums; irregular heartbeat, river, and fixed tagelharpa motif] Stone became wood. Wood became air. The tower stood— then was never there. The eye became small. The scratching grew still. The blade became shadow. The sea filled. The garden moved forward. The staircase moved back. Every year changed— except the black. [One enormous raven croak] [Final chorus—full frame drums, bowed bass, and heavy sub; strained chant] Stone bends where the black wing goes. Wood knocks low and the heartbeat slows. Time leaves tracks, then takes them whole. I don’t know. [Bowed bass bends; tagelharpa remains fixed] But the raven knows. But the raven knows. What the raven knows. [Whispered background] (What the raven knows…) [Outro—layers peel backward] The rounded wall flattened to gravel and lines. The last stone step slipped out of time. [Frame drum stops] The fountain kept running. The lanterns still glowed. [Bowed bass fades] The pale face waited. The river flowed. [One fixed tagelharpa note, then silence] And the raven— [One distant raven croak; river remains] watched. And knows.
