On Sunday morning, you were toasting bread, Keeping the burnt slice for yourself. You watered the plant by the window, Picking off dead leaves with your fingers. The news showed a distant town, Naming people who were here just yesterday. Without a word, we turned off the screen And drank our coffee, already cold. We had come this far Without wondering how long it would last. But that morning, it suddenly struck me: Even these familiar days will someday fade. So today, let me pay attention— To the way your eyes narrow when you smile, To the breeze passing through the balcony, And the little scratches on the table. If all of this will someday grow distant, There’s no hurry to give it meaning. I just want to live without overlooking This one day, here before us. That afternoon, outside the flower shop Near the station, someone held white flowers. Beside them, two students in uniform Shared an ice cream, laughing together. On the train home, my face in the window Had more lines than I remembered. The same time passes through you, too, And there is no way to make it stop. If we only learn what mattered After it is gone, Then at least I want to remember What is still here, while I can. So today, let’s take it a little slower, Walking together at your pace. Along the same road we took yesterday, Flowers bloom whose names we don’t know. Even if nothing remains, It won’t mean that nothing happened. The time we spent together here Will stay alive within us. Somewhere inside, we trust We’ll wake tomorrow, and fall asleep. Still, today, let’s say what we can, And not leave what needs saying until tomorrow. You being here, me being here— Someday, it will all be a story from long ago. Today’s footsteps become tomorrow’s path.
