[Basement hum, flickering light] They hired a girl named Denise. 1998. Fresh out of community college, filing clerk. They sent her down to the courthouse basement to digitize the old records. Box 1974 through 1979. Water-stained. Mouse-chewed. She found it on her third day. A file tied with real twine. No number. Just a name on the front. The ink was scratched out. Deep scratches, like somebody used a key. Inside... one page left. Arrest report. Charge: you know what they said it was. But the accuser signature line? Blank. Never signed. And at the bottom, in different handwriting, someone wrote: "Witness recanted. File to be sealed per Judge -" The rest is burned. Like someone held a lighter to it. Denise said the basement got cold when she read it. And that south clock... even from the basement, three floors down, she heard it tick. Once. Then stop. She took the file upstairs. Sheriff at the time looked at it, went pale, and said "Girl, you didn't find nothing." Next day, her desk was cleared. File gone. And Denise? She left town that week. Won't talk about it to this day. But I got a copy. From the trash can she pulled it out of. And the name they scratched out? I know it.
