I Thought I Heard Milton

[Verse 1 – lead] My first punk show was a lifetime back, In a club that’s dust and track Shut down twenty years ago, Nothing left but afterglow And I was there with some old friend A fella we forgot to know But in that noise and flashing light I swear I heard a name below [Verse 1 – background] (a name below) [Chorus – all] I thought I heard Milton! (heard Milton!) In the pit where bodies flew! (bodies flew!) Didn’t know what it meant then But somehow now I do! I thought I heard Milton! (heard Milton!) Echo off the stage! (off the stage!) Before we said “I’m Dail Milton!” (Milton!) Before the fella age! [Verse 2 – lead] Was it shouted from the rafters or a mumble by the door? Did the singer hit it sideways like a secret we ignore? All I know is in the chaos something cut straight through the din Just a syllable in passing But it settled deep within [Verse 2 – background] (but it settled deep within) [Chorus – all] I thought I heard Milton! (heard Milton!) At my very first show! (first show!) Didn’t know what it meant then But looking back I know! I thought I heard Milton! (heard Milton!) Like a whisper through the sound! (through the sound!) Before Dail had a fella Before the name was found! [Bridge – chant, printed four times] In the noise! (in the noise!) Something calling me! (calling me!) In the noise! (in the noise!) Like a prophecy! (prophecy!) In the noise! (in the noise!) Name before its time! (before its time!) In the noise! (in the noise!) Milton in the rhyme! (in the rhyme!) [Final Chorus – all] I thought I heard Milton! (heard Milton!) And now I know it’s true! (know it’s true!) Some legends start in memory Long before they’re due! I thought I heard Milton! (heard Milton!) And the feeling’s never gone! (never gone!) That name was in the rafters Before the fellas sang along!
