18. The Rope between Our Lives | Moby-Dick Act III: The Price of the Chase

V6

[The Scene] After Stubb’s successful whale hunt, the danger continues as the crew begin the work of processing the carcass alongside the Pequod. Queequeg goes out upon the whale while a rope connects his safety to Ishmael aboard the ship. Every movement of the carcass and sea places both men at risk, turning the friendship formed ashore into a bond of practical trust. Ishmael must hold steady while Queequeg works, and Queequeg places his life in his friend’s hands, giving physical form to the loyalty that has grown between them. [Verse 1] The whale lies broad beside us in the swell, I climb where blood and seawater mix well. The rope runs back from me across the foam, To Ishmael's hand, the hand that leads me home. [Verse 2] I trust the line that joins his hand to mine, A living bond drawn taut through spray and brine. If one slips, both must answer to the strain, So calm must hold where fear would pull in vain. [Chorus] The rope between our lives is drawn and tight, It holds through blood and water, day and night. I place my weight where friendship makes it known, I do not stand beside this whale alone. [Verse 3] The carcass rolls beneath my working feet, The sea climbs cold where oil and saltwater meet. I keep my balance, hand and body true, Because the rope runs steady back to you. [Verse 4] No speech is needed when the line is drawn, We learned our trust before this bloody dawn. You feel each movement travel through the strand, I feel your judgement steady in your hand. [Chorus] The rope between our lives is drawn and tight, It holds through blood and water, day and night. I place my weight where friendship makes it known, I do not stand beside this whale alone. [Verse 5] I left one island, found a friend at sea, And now his grip holds more than rope for me. The work is harsh, the water dark and wide, Yet trust can make me face it at your side. [Verse 6] If I should fall, the sea would pull us down, Yet neither fear nor haste may make us drown. I work because I know your hand is true, And trust the rope because I trust in you. [Chorus] The rope between our lives is drawn and tight, It holds through blood and water, day and night. I place my weight where friendship makes it known, I do not stand beside this whale alone. [Outro] The line lies slack when we have done our share, Yet what it proved remains between us there. I went where danger asked me not to fall, And trusted one true friend beyond it all.
