Who Is Looking?

V5.5

[Near silence] [One distant tone] Open your eyes. Look at something. Anything. [Long pause] .. A wall. A tree. A face. Your own hand. Just... Look. [Pause] Now notice... You know... That you are looking. [Long silence] ... Your eyes receive light. Your brain receives signals. An image appears. But... Who... Sees it? [Soft ambient drone begins] A camera... Has a lens. Light enters. An image is formed. It can record... Everything... In front of it. But does the camera... Know... That it sees? [Long pause] .... Your eyes... Are remarkable. But if Life... Leaves the body... The eyes... Remain. Same shape. Same lens. Same color. Yet... They no longer see. [Silence] So perhaps... Seeing... Requires something... The eye... Does not possess. [Music slowly widens] Close your eyes. [Pause] The room disappears. But... You don't. [Long pause] .... There is darkness. And somehow... You know... There is darkness. So... What knows? [Very long pause] .... A thought appears. You notice it. A memory appears. You notice it. An image appears... Behind closed eyes. You notice that too. [Pause] If you can notice... The thought... Can the thought... Be the one noticing? If you can notice... The image... Can the image... Be the one looking? [Subtle low pulse enters] Look again. [Pause] This time... Don't pay attention... Only to what you see. Notice... That seeing... Is happening. [Long silence] Scripture says... "The eyes of the LORD... Are in every place..." [Pause] What could that mean... If God... Is Spirit? [Long pause] ... Does Spirit... Need eyes? Or could eyes... Be something... Spirit... Looks through? [Music becomes warmer] Scripture says... "In him... We live... And move... And have our being." Then where... Could you look... That is outside... Of Him? [Long pause.] ... And where... Could you look... From... That is outside... Of Him? [Very long silence] Perhaps... We have spent our lives... Thinking the eye... Is the observer... Because the eye... Is the part... We can see. But the thing... That knows... Seeing is happening... Has never appeared... In the picture. [Music thins] Stand before a mirror. Look directly... Into your own eyes. You can see... Your eyes. You can see... Your face. You can see... The body... You have called... Me. [Pause] But can you see... The one... Who is seeing it? [Long silence] The mirror... Can show you... Everything... That has form. So if the observer... Never appears... In the reflection... What... Are you? [Music nearly disappears] Don't answer. Just... Look. [Long pause] ... And notice... The strange simplicity... Of this. Something... Is aware... That seeing... Is happening. [Very long pause] .... Who... Is looking? [Two minutes of slowly dissolving ambient sound] Notice... What remains. [Silence]
