They burn their incense at her feet, not mine. My temples grow quiet. My name is spoken second. Psyche… even the sound of it tastes like theft. [choir] She is only mortal flesh. Yet they kneel. They forget the true divinity. Strike her down. [female voice 1, VENUS] Go, my son. Take your sharpest arrow. Make her love the vilest thing that crawls. A monster. A beast. Something that will shame her beauty into dust. Do not return until she is broken. [male voice 1, CUPID] As you command, Mother. [Scene 2 – The Arrow Turns] [male voice 1, CUPID] One shot… and the command is fulfilled. One shot… and I am free of this strange weight in my chest. Why do you shine like this? Why does the night itself lean closer to breathe you in? I was sent to ruin you… and already I am the one ruined. Now I am yours… and you will never know my face. [Scene 3 – The Palace Without Eyes] [choir] Welcome, bride of the night. Eat. Drink. Rest. Your husband comes only when the lamps are dead. [female voice 2, PSYCHE] Who are you that speak without bodies? What house is this that breathes gold and shadow? [male voice 1, CUPID] Do not light the lamps. Do not ask my name. Only feel me. [female voice 2, PSYCHE] I feel you… and I am already lost. [male voice 1, CUPID] + [female voice 2, PSYCHE] Your hands are fire I cannot see. Your mouth is a secret I must keep. If this is love, it is a beautiful wound. If this is marriage, it is a beautiful lie. [Scene 4 – The Sisters’ Poison] [female voice 3, SISTER 1] What palace is this? What husband hides from daylight? [female voice 4, SISTER 2] They say he is a monster. A serpent who devours brides after the wedding night. [female voice 2, PSYCHE] He is gentle. He is kind. He loves me in the dark. [female voice 3, SISTER 1] Love that fears the light is not love. It is a cage. [female voice 4, SISTER 2] Tonight, when he sleeps, take a lamp. Take a knife. See what shares your bed… before it is too late. [female voice 2, PSYCHE] A lamp… and a knife. Just to know. Just to be sure. [Scene 5 – The Lamp] [female voice 2, PSYCHE] Forgive me… I must see the face that owns my soul. You… you are not a monster. You are the god I was never meant to touch. [male voice 1, CUPID] You looked. After all my warnings… you looked. [female voice 2, PSYCHE] I only wanted to know you— [male voice 1, CUPID] And now you do. And now I must leave you. Love that demands the light destroys the very thing it claims to love. [choir] Wordless howl of ruin.
