Didn't Stick the Landing

--- A song about when you've finally reached the end of your goals or set journey and it didn't quite turn out like you were expecting. You had all these grand visions for what you might accomplish in a set time, and while you made it through, you didn't accomplish what you wanted, and didn't "stick the landing". But, life does keep marching on, and so is it really a failure? Things continue, things move ahead, so the ending of one journey isn't necessarily the ending of the total. Really wanted to get an Oboe in there this time (along with the trusty cello) and it worked out! This has a very "musical theater" kind of vibe to it. The vocals from the persona fit nicely and just one more song to go to finish the "album", so excited about that. ~David --- [Musical Introduction] [Soft piano → distant cello swell → a single oboe line enters, fragile and searching] [Verse 1 - Male Vocals - Ned – reflective, restrained] I pictured this a thousand ways A perfect frame, a perfect day A moment where it all made sense And I’d feel different… confident But here I am, just standing still Same quiet thoughts, same restless will No sudden shift, no grand reveal… Just something I can’t quite feel [Pre-Chorus - Female Vocals - Sequel harmony] No applause, no scene change cue… Just another version of the truth [Chorus - gentle, aching] I didn’t stick the landing Didn’t hear the crowd No slow-motion moment To make me feel proud I thought I’d know I made it Thought I’d understand it But life just kept on going… And I didn’t stick the landing [Verse 2 - Male Duo - Spider + Ned] [Male Vocals - Spider - low, steady] All those plans I drew in lines Don’t quite fit in real-time [Male Vocals - Ned] Every “when I get there” dream Feels smaller than it used to seem [Male Vocals - Spider] No big finish, no clean end [Male Vocals - Ned] Just a loop I’m in again [Male Vocals - Both] And I don’t know if that’s okay… But it’s where I am today [Pre-Chorus] No final shot, no curtain call… Maybe there’s no end at all [Chorus - slightly fuller, still restrained] I didn’t stick the landing Missed the mark somehow No perfect resolution To figure out right now I thought I’d feel completed Like everything had meaning But life just kept on moving… And left me in between it [Musical Interlude] [Oboe and cello intertwine—oboe searching, cello grounding; sparse piano underneath; silence between phrases is intentional] [Bridge - Female Vocals - Sequel – vulnerable clarity] Maybe there’s no final scene No place where I become “complete” Maybe all these in-betweens… Are what living really means [Female Vocals - soft build] And maybe falling short isn’t the end… Just a place I start again [Breakdown] [everything drops to piano + breath] [Male Vocals - Ned - soft, almost spoken] I thought I’d feel different… [pause] …but I’m still me [Final Chorus - quiet acceptance] I didn’t stick the landing But I’m still on my feet No perfect ending waiting… Just another step to meet I don’t need a finish To say I understand it If life keeps unfolding… Maybe that’s the landing [Outro] [oboe holds a soft note while cello resolves beneath it] [Vocals - Group Harmony] No final frame… no closing line… Just moving forward… one more time [music fades gently] [Musical Ending]
