[Spoken Intro] Death. Humanity's oldest unsolved mystery. Thousands of religions. Thousands of philosophers. Several billion confident opinions. And remarkably few verified customer reviews. So before departing... please check your itinerary. [Verse 1] Genesis says you're made from dust And dust you'll be again Which isn't terribly encouraging But easy to comprehend Ecclesiastes gets poetic Everything has got its turn Dust goes back into the earth And spirit must return Then Daniel speaks of sleepers Who someday rise again So apparently the grave might not exactly be... the end. [Spoken] Good. That would have been useful to put near the beginning. [Chorus] Where do we go when we go? Nobody living seems to know Up to heaven? Down below? Wait in Sheol? Back we go? Maybe resurrection day Maybe we're reborn in Bombay Everybody packed a different map For a trip they've never made. So don't be in a hurry There's really no need to race Because you only get to discover who's right after leaving this place. [Verse 2] The Greeks had Hades waiting With a ferryman and boat Which means apparently in death you should always carry coins The Norse preferred Valhalla With the warriors and mead Though dying gloriously in battle seems a rather steep entry fee Then philosophers kept thinking And religions multiplied Soon humanity had franchises For what happens when you die Clouds and harps Or halls and feasting Judgment Sleep Rebirth We've got more destinations after death than airports have on Earth. [Chorus] Where do we go when we go? Everybody says they know Paradise? Another life? Cosmic waiting room tonight? Maybe resurrection day Maybe karma sends you back this way Perhaps you wake up as a prince Perhaps... a moderately disappointed goat. [Spoken Interlude] Reincarnation does have an interesting customer-retention model. "You didn't quite understand existence?" That's fine. Please take another number. [Verse 3] Maybe Hindus had it closer Round and round the wheel we ride Life and death and life repeating Till we finally get it right Maybe Buddhists found an exit From the wanting and the chase Which, considering human shopping habits, could take the entire race Maybe ancient Hebrews pictured Sheol silent in the ground Not the cartoon flames and pitchforks We eventually passed around Then resurrection changes things: Not escaping Earth for good But waking from the sleep of death Which is... actually rather different than most people understood. [Bridge] And we borrowed from each other As the centuries rolled by Greeks and Romans Norsemen Persians Everybody asking why Stories crossed through trade and conquest Words acquired another name Until heaven, Hades, paradise All wandered through the frame Now ask ten people what comes next And confidently they'll say: "Well obviously..." Then give you ten completely different answers about Judgment Day. [Verse 4] Maybe consciousness continues Maybe everything goes black Maybe God eventually calls And everybody's coming back Maybe you've been here before And somehow failed to recognize That annoying guy who works with you was your accountant three lives back. Maybe death is just a doorway Maybe death is simply death Maybe resurrection waits beyond Our final earthly breath There is one experiment That settles every theory ever said Unfortunately... you have to be dead. [Final Chorus] Where do we go when we go? Someday every one will know Maybe heaven Maybe sleep Maybe something strange and deep Maybe resurrection day Maybe karma sends us back this way Maybe every civilization Caught a fragment of the show But don't go rushing off to check Because here's the thing we actually know: You're here. You're breathing. You've got time. So perhaps enjoy the ride. [Outro] Death. The ultimate answer to humanity's oldest question. Unfortunately, the answer key is distributed after the exam. So love somebody. Learn something. Plant a tree. Watch a sunset. Call your mother. And please... do not attempt to verify the afterlife ahead of schedule. You might be right. You might be wrong. You might come back as a goat. Either way... there are no refunds. [Spoken] Earth. Temporary accommodation. Checkout time: not currently disclosed.
