[Verse] They thought they had the most holy words And they thought they had the best sermons But I never saw them move a single grain of sand, No foundation for their words that sank in rock [Verse] They thought it was fun to speak behind your back Tell everyone who they thought you were fucking Casual dinner conversations at the church buffet And your personal life was the main course [Chorus] And they said, Sing as many hymns as you want, you’ll never be clean You are unworthy of forgiveness, boy, confess everyday Maybe someone could grant you salvation, but they won’t They say you fall short, no contrition will ever be enough [Bridge] Our Father who art in heaven or is it I believe in God The father almighty? They could never see beyond The concrete walls that sealed them in. Secrets held Close, but just their secrets. They wouldn’t keep yours [Chorus] And they said, Sing as many hymns as you want, you’ll never be clean You are unworthy of forgiveness, boy, confess everyday Maybe someone could grant you salvation, but they won’t They say you fall short, no contrition will ever be enough [Instrument] [Verse] Such wonderful acts of charity, offering forgiveness But they never would forgive your own offerings. Don’t even think, each thought is a crime against nature... There is not enough holy light to burn through your sin [Final Chorus] And they said, Sing as many hymns as you want, you’ll never be clean You are unworthy of forgiveness, boy, confess everyday Maybe someone could grant you salvation, but they won’t They say you fall short, no contrition will ever be enough
