YOUNG PROFESSOR. 8.Let’s have a New Year in October

[singer A] Everybody waits for the calendar to turn Champagne on the windowsill, little candles burn But I found a better reason in a week of silver rain When the clouds sit low on every roof We can start again Call your friends from the corner shop Bring the paper crowns and let the small plans stop If the daylight hides away We can make our own bright day Let’s have a New Year in October Raise your glass when the leaves turn gold Put a little celebration in the weather Give the gray sky something to hold No permission, no particular reason Just a room full of people we know Let’s have a New Year in October And begin before the old year goes [transition] [singer B] Someone’s baking cinnamon, someone’s tuning up the keys Your neighbor brings a crooked cake and dances in the breeze The rain taps on the awning like a drummer keeping time And every coat around the table Looks like party lights Call your friends from the corner shop Bring the paper crowns and let the small plans stop If the daylight hides away We can make our own bright day Let’s have a New Year in October Raise your glass when the leaves turn gold Put a little celebration in the weather Give the gray sky something to hold No permission, no particular reason Just a room full of people we know Let’s have a New Year in October And begin before the old year goes [melodic interlude] [singer A] Here’s to every Tuesday worth remembering Every sudden spark that pulls us in We don’t need the clock to tell us When the good times can begin If the sun is behind the clouds tonight We’ll make enough of our own light Let’s have a New Year in October Raise your glass when the leaves turn gold Put a little celebration in the weather Give the gray sky something to hold No permission, no particular reason Just a room full of people we know Let’s have a New Year in October And begin before the old year goes [singer B] New page, same friends, open the door New page, same friends, we’re ready for more New Year in October New Year in October
