Before We End

NARRATION ONLY — SPOKEN WORD — DO NOT SING [Intro | silence | no music at first | allow space] Before we end, there’s something that needs to be said. [Pause] Addiction should not be taken lightly. What you’ve just heard is not exaggeration. It’s not metaphor for effect. It’s what happens when addiction is allowed to grow unchecked. [Pause] It takes lives. It takes people who are loved. It takes parents, partners, friends. It leaves families trying to understand what they could have done differently. [Pause] The loss of my friend Chris is part of this story. Not as a lesson. Not as a warning sign after the fact. But as proof of what addiction can take when help doesn’t arrive in time. [Long pause] If you’re listening to this and you’re struggling yourself, please hear this clearly: [Pause] Your life depends on taking this seriously. Addiction does not resolve on its own. It does not disappear because you want it to. And willpower alone is rarely enough. [Pause] Recovery requires help. It requires honesty. It requires opening a conversation that might feel impossible to start. [Pause] But it matters. Because your life matters. [Longer pause | breath] I chose to end this album with the cost of addiction, not the story of recovery. I did that intentionally. Because too often we soften the truth. We talk about recovery without fully acknowledging what happens when addiction is ignored or minimized. [Pause] Families and friends have more power than they realize. Intervention matters. Speaking up matters. Trying again matters. Nothing is more important than helping someone get the support they need. [Pause] If you love someone who is struggling, and you’re afraid of saying the wrong thing, or making things worse, please don’t let silence be the decision. Trying matters. Even when it doesn’t work the first time. Even when it’s messy. Even when it’s uncomfortable. [Pause] There *is* a path to recovery. I know this because I found one. Real recovery is not about avoiding pain. It’s about learning how to live with it. It teaches you how to sit with discomfort, how to experience pleasure without needing to escape it, and how to accept life as it is, instead of fighting it at every turn. [Pause] You learn how to be okay with who you are — not numb, not distracted, not running. That kind of freedom is real. And it is far more rewarding than the false relief addiction ever offered. [Pause] But it comes at a cost. Recovery takes everything you have. It has to become your full-time work. You cannot simply return to life exactly as it was before and expect different results. [Pause] The fear is real. The work is hard. The pain is unavoidable. But it is temporary. And what it gives you in return is a life that no longer needs to be escaped. [Final long pause] This album exists to wake us up. To take addiction seriously. To talk about it honestly. And to remember that behind every statistic is a person — and a family — whose life is changed forever. [Outro | silence | do not resolve]
