Tiny The known dimension of the Universe refers to the observable Universe: a sphere whose diameter is estimated at approximately 93 billion light-years, although its limits are now about 45 billion light-years away due to ongoing cosmic expansion. This means that light has had 13.8 billion years to reach us from a point that has, in the meantime, moved vastly farther away. The total size of the Universe remains unknown and could be infinite, but it has no “edge,” since it is all that exists. Our solar system, for its part, extends over a few hundred astronomical units (AU), or roughly 15 billion kilometers, which represents only an infinitesimal portion of our galaxy, the Milky Way, which itself contains hundreds of billions of stars similar to the Sun. When one considers the vanishingly small space occupied by the human body within this immense Universe, one might almost say that we do not exist at all, like an embodied consciousness on a tiny raft adrift in infinity. We occupy a space that is even smaller, relative to the Universe, than that occupied by a virus invisible to the naked eye relative to us.
