We were driving through New England, Where the autumn colors glowed. Then a sign warned, "Low Visibility Ahead" And we drove into fog covering the road. The mountains disappeared from view, The trees were hidden in it. We knew that beauty waited there, But we couldn't see any of it. Then suddenly we drove out of the fog, And WO! The sunlight broke through. The hills were dressed in brilliant colors, Every shade and every hue! The beauty stretched for miles ahead, More than our eyes could take in. The colors hadn't gone away— We could just see them again! The colors were there all along, Though hidden from our sight. The fog had covered everything, But couldn't dim their light. And when we drove beyond the fog, Gold, red, and every shade between! The colors were there all along, Just waiting there to be seen! Sometimes anger clouds our vision, Sometimes hurt gets in the way. Fear and pride can hide the beauty, And the things we cannot say. We can get so lost in sorrow, Or the stories we believe, That we miss the love around us, And the good we could receive. For seventeen years I loved you, More deeply than words can say. You were a huge focus of my life, I thought of and prayed for you every day. There was laughter and memories, And so much you meant to me. Those years are still part of our story, Though the fog makes them hard to see. You could read through every conversation, Every question, every tear. You'd find my love woven through them, It's been there through all these years. Even when my heart was breaking, Even when I wrote the songs, My love was underneath it all— It was there all along. My love was there all along, Though hidden from your sight. The fog may have covered everything, But couldn't dim its light. And if you ever move beyond the fog, What beauty could be seen! My love was there all along, Woven through everything. I can't control the weather, Or the fog you're looking through. I can't make the clouds disappear, Or change the view for you. But I don't have to paint the mountains, Or put colors in the trees. The beauty and my love are waiting there, Whenever you're ready to see. The love was there all along, In the life we shared back then. In every word, in every tear, In the love that never ends. Maybe someday you'll look again, And see what you couldn't see before. The fog may have hidden all the colors— But my love was always yours. The mountains didn't lose their beauty, Nor the splendor of the trees. The colors hadn't changed at all— Only what we could see. The colors were there all along. And so was my love for you.
