TIME 024 – The Last Journey | The Time Machine

(Verse 1) The Traveller returned at last beneath his lamp-lit roof, And told the gathered company his tale as living proof. They listened to impossible accounts of worlds unknown, While doubt still sat among them though his weariness had shown. (Verse 2) The next day found him ready with supplies beside the frame, A little camera in his hand before he left again. He promised his companions he would shortly reappear, Then touched the waiting lever and dissolved beyond the year. (Chorus) The last journey carried him where no one else could know, Through some forgotten yesterday or future yet to grow. No message ever followed and no traveller came through, Only silence kept the secret of the road on which he flew. (Verse 3) They waited for his footsteps and the opening of the door, But hour followed after hour and he returned no more. No engine broke the stillness and no voice disturbed the room, His final destination stayed concealed beyond the gloom. (Verse 4) Yet in the clothes he left behind two fragile flowers lay, The blossoms Weena gave him in that unimaginably distant day. No scholar knew their species and no sceptic could explain, How petals from another age had crossed the temporal plain. (Chorus) The last journey carried him where no one else could know, Through some forgotten yesterday or future yet to grow. No message ever followed and no traveller came through, Only silence kept the secret of the road on which he flew. (Bridge) Perhaps he sought another age where mankind still might rise, Perhaps he passed beyond the reach of mortal human eyes. The machine had made all history a wilderness to roam, And somewhere in eternity he chose another home. (Outro) Two flowers were the evidence that all was not unkind, A small and fading testament to what he left behind. For though the ages darkened and the final stars might end, Somewhere within the stream of time, one heart had known a friend.
