Faultlines
A skin that didn’t fit broken. Broken open. I feared the lines, I feared the stretch. Chasm on my body where growth would not commit. Veins like fault lines, trembling at the edge of shift. Marks like riverbeds shaped by pressure, not by wish. I traced myself in silence, found cliff-face in my side. Flesh folded like weathered bark each layer learned to hide. And still, I called it damage. Still believed the names they gave. But moss grows deep in cracked stone, and even ruin learns to stay. I buried breath in the soil, asked the wind to remember. Wrote my name in water, let it scatter, let it tremble. I don’t need to shine. I don’t need to mend. Just let the wound be sacred, and the scar pretend it never had to end. I pressed herbs to the fault not to fix, but to feel. Lit smoke in my mouth and called that the meal. I traced old songs on my chest with a stone gone warm. Didn’t know the tongue, but the ache felt worn. This ain’t about clean. This ain’t about pure. It’s about sitting in the dirt and naming my cure. So I stitched my name in ash, drew circles where it hurt Not to summon light, just to honor the earth. Came cracked, came raw, came wrapped in dust didn’t break, didn’t beg, didn’t ask for much. I bled on the stones, I danced in the rust made gods from gravel, built faith from the crust. They marked me wrong too wide, too loud. Now I roll with ghosts that don’t bow down. We drum with the heel, we spit with the tongue we burn what we were ‘til the song is sung. Fast with the fire, slow with the name. I ain’t clean, but I still came claimed. We the kinfolk carved in fault scarred in rhythm, and grown in salt. I move like water carved me slow, then sudden. Edges soft where rage once cut in. My spine runs faultline deep. My hips bend like river bends not to yield, but to stay. No map could hold this body. I’ve outgrown the grid. I carry every layer like canyon did. I buried breath in the soil, now it sings when I move. Wrote my name in the dust, and the canyon made room. Don’t need to shine. Don’t need to mend. I dance, and the fault lines shift to bend. The wound stays open, but the land still trusts every step I take kicks up stars from dust.
