Echoes, Not a Song

I see you in that glass you stare through, I’ve worn that same unfamiliar face too. Some nights I still reach for what we were, Then pull my hand back, unsure if I should. What we felt was real, I won’t pretend, It lived in the space where time bends. But closeness doesn’t always know where to go, Sometimes it burns, sometimes it goes slow. I hear your voice when the world goes still, It settles in places I can’t quite heal. I wanted more than what we could hold, That wanting alone is what makes it cold. I didn’t stop caring, I learned restraint, Learned how to live with the things we can’t change. Some truths hurt softer when left unspoken, Some hearts stay warm even when they’re broken. If you’re searching for light in the dark you’re in, Know I never wished you’d disappear. I just couldn’t promise what I wasn’t sure, Or follow a dream I couldn’t endure. There’s something here still, quiet and true, And doubt that pulls me away from you. Both exist, and neither one lies, That’s the hardest truth to say out loud. So if we’re echoes instead of a song, Please know we were real, even if not long. I carry the spark, though it comes with pain, Something I felt once… and still can’t explain.
