[Verse 1] I was working late one evening Talking life across a desk A friend who wore no label Asked a question I won’t forget He said, “If heaven is the reason People choose the good they do Is kindness still just kindness Or is there something else shining through?” I sat there in the silence Let his words fall like the rain Not to tear my faith apart But to help me see again [Pre-Chorus] Sometimes truth arrives unexpected Through a voice we never planned A lesson wrapped in friendship Placed gently in our hands [Chorus] What if kindness needs no witness What if love is reason enough What if every heart is searching For a way to lift someone up Believer, doubter, seeker Walking roads we cannot see May we choose compassion freely May we choose humanity For kindness given freely Is a light for all to see [Verse 2] I've heard people draw the boundaries Who's outside and who's within Who is worthy of salvation Who is clean and who has sinned But every soul is fighting battles Every life has known its pain And maybe grace looks larger Than the boxes we have made Maybe God sees every person Far beyond the names we claim And loves the atheist and preacher With exactly the same flame [Pre-Chorus] Different maps and different stories Different words for mystery Yet every act of mercy Plants another living seed [Chorus] What if kindness needs no witness What if love is reason enough What if every heart is searching For a way to lift someone up Believer, doubter, seeker Walking roads we cannot see May we choose compassion freely May we choose humanity For kindness given freely Is a light for all to see [Bridge] Freddy, you are loved by God Even if you disagree Love was never meant for ownership It was always meant to be Like the sunshine on the mountains Like the rain upon the sea Falling freely on all people Without condition, endlessly [Final Chorus] So let us stop the endless arguing About who holds heaven's key And start becoming examples Of the love we're meant to be Believer, doubter, seeker Every branch upon the tree May we meet each other kindly May we live respectfully For every being carries value Every heart deserves to be seen And kindness given for kindness' sake May be the holiest thing we've seen [Outro] All beings are loved equally The sun shines on every shore May we leave this world more gentle Than it was the day before
