[Verse 1] Down where the tall spears bend in the breeze There’s a black and white shape in the trees Stands so still you might walk by Till you hear that wooden cry Hunters came with their sticks held high With sharpened ends and steady eye They made their mark upon the ground He chewed it up without a sound [Chorus] Oh the beast in the green With a mild and easy grin He will bite through anything Let the splinters fall where they spin Oh the beast in the green Looks so quiet, looks so clean But if you raise your spear at him He’ll snap it neat and tuck it in [Verse 2] Folks back home by the river bend Say he’s neither foe nor friend Never chases, never roars Just leaves shavings on the forest floor Bring him wood with a pointed head He’ll take the tip and leave you dread Crack by crack it’s gone from sight Morning sun till fall of night [Chorus] Oh the beast in the green With a mild and easy grin He will bite through anything Let the splinters fall where they spin Oh the beast in the green Looks so quiet, looks so clean But if you raise your spear at him He’ll snap it neat and tuck it in [Bridge] He don’t hurry, he don’t shout Still the tall spears thin out Bit by bit and inch by inch Wood will crack and wood will flinch [Chorus] Oh the beast in the green With a mild and easy grin He will bite through anything Let the splinters fall where they spin Oh the beast in the green Looks so quiet, looks so clean But if you raise your spear at him He’ll snap it neat and tuck it in
