# THE BODY IN THE BEDROOM They found a body in the bedroom, but nobody called the law. Funny thing about a midnight crime nobody knows what they saw. There was lipstick on the telephone, and whiskey on the floor. A little black dress by the doorway, and a key beside the door. The clock had stopped at 2:03, the moon was dressed in blue. There were three shadows on the wall... But only one of them was you. The detective asked me questions, said, *“Who had motive, who had means?”* I said, *“Everybody wants something, and nobody's always clean.”* He found your perfume on the pillow, found somebody else's flame. He asked me who the victim was. I couldn't give him a name. Oh, there's a body in the bedroom, and a raven at the glass. Somebody murdered something, baby something that was never meant to last. Was it jealousy? Was it love? Was it just the devil dressed in skin? There's a body in the bedroom... And I don't know who let the killer in. You said the night had made you reckless, said the wine had made you blind. But wine don't write the message, girl, and whiskey don't make the sign. I could've blamed the stranger, could've cursed him till dawn. But a man can't break a window if the window isn't gone. So I sat beside the body, and I held its frozen hand. Funny thing... It looked like mine. Oh, there's a body in the bedroom, and a raven at the glass. Somebody murdered something, baby something that was never meant to last. Was it jealousy? Was it love? Was it just the devil dressed in skin? There's a body in the bedroom... And I don't know who let the killer in. Now the coroner says, *“Death came slow.”* The preacher says, *“Let the poor soul go.”* But the mirror knows what neither man can prove Sometimes you don't kill a heart. Sometimes... you just give it something to live through. They found no fingerprints, darling, no weapon, no bloodstained knife. Just two empty glasses and a little less love than life. The detective closed his notebook, said, *“Some cases never end.”* I said, *“That's alright, detective...”* Then I poured a drink for the dead... and another for my friend. There's a body in the bedroom, and the moon won't testify. There's a woman wearing innocence, and a man who won't say why. Was it jealousy? Was it love? Was it something neither could forgive? There's a body in the bedroom... But darling which one of us is supposed to live? They never found the murder weapon. They never found the crime. Just an open door at 2:03... and a heart that stopped before its time.
