Feynman 2-2.1: Physics by 1920

[Intro: Sound of Rain and Radio Tuning] [Sample: Muffled 1920s Jazz Horn - Short] [Beat Drop: Smooth Upright Bass and Drums] (Yeah...) (Let's go back.) (1920.) [Verse 1: Smooth Flow] It is a little difficult to begin with the present view. So let's see how things looked... in 1920. Before that time... the world picture was this. The "stage" on which the universe goes... Is the three-dimensional space of geometry. (Described by Euclid) And things change in a medium called Time. (Tick tock...) The elements on the stage are particles. For example... the atoms. First property: Inertia. If a particle is moving... it keeps on going. In the same direction... unless forces act upon it. (Keep it moving...) [Chorus: Melodic Jazz Hook - Female Vocal Sample] [Saxophone solo in background] (The Machinery...) Two varieties of forces. One is complicated... holding atoms tight. Salt dissolving... chemistry and light. The other is smooth... (Smooth...) Gravitation. [Verse 2: Storytelling Flow] Gravity... a long-range interaction. A smooth and quiet attraction. Varying inversely as the square of the distance. Why things remain in motion? (Nobody knew.) Why there is a law of gravitation? (Nobody knew.) [Bridge: Bass Solo Breakdown] A description of nature is what we are concerned with. A gas... and all matter... Is a myriad of moving particles. Check the seashore. [Verse 3: Rhythmic List] First the pressure... collisions with the walls. The drift of the atoms... that is Wind. The random internal motions... are the Heat. Waves of excess density... pushing up piles. This wave of excess density... is Sound. (Can you hear it?) [Outro: Saxophone Fade Out] It is a tremendous achievement... to understand so much. 92 different kinds of atoms. Different names. That was the picture. (1920.) [Fade to silence]
