We cannot remain unmoved in the face of the near-total destruction of Gaza, standing in that place where no medical service, no supply of drinking water, no electricity exists. There, ninety-two percent of the land is but a field of rubble, strewn over buried bodies. We cannot turn our thoughts away from what Russia has done to Ukraine. And I return to it often, for truthfully, it is the young men who are cut down first, as in all wars — young lives full of promise, utterly destroyed. To be a boy in this crumbling world is a complete curse, a one-way ticket to the firing squad. We cannot stay cold before the destruction of the economy, of democracy, of the fragile threads of health insurance of our neighbors to the South. They are friends, they are family, and their quality of life is being torn apart — their hope for a decent existence. We cannot stay indifferent to the global abandonment of all efforts to slow the greenhouse effect that drives the warming of planet Earth, without rushing to the voluntary rescue of the biosphere. We are but one species among all the others sharing this fleeting resource. On this beautiful October Sunday, I wish you peace and resilience, energy and trust, and faith in life beyond the thresholds of consciousness.
