Bodies Under Applause
[Intro] Curtain up. Floor cold. Everybody claps when the bodies don’t. [Verse 1] The lights came down like judgment, gold dust hanging in the air. Every chair held somebody breathing, every mouth learned not to care. There were crowns in the aisle, letters underfoot, wine gone black in the glass. There were names on the program no one wanted by the time the ending passed. I saw kings fold small as paper. I saw lovers lose the room. I saw brothers sell the doorway, then call the locked door truth. Every hand that made the damage washed itself in public sound. And the crowd kept rising, rising, while the wreckage stayed down. [Chorus] Bodies under applause, hands in the air. Everybody saw. Nobody there. Curtain comes down. Red on the walls. We clap so loud we don’t hear the fall. [Verse 2] There’s a bell still shaking in the rafters. There’s a handprint drying on the sleeve. There’s a flower gone quiet by the water. There’s a crown with nothing to believe. Rome has wolves behind the marble. Scotland keeps smoke in the stone. Venice left a lamp still burning in a room nobody owns. All the villains took their bows. All the ghosts stood in the wings. All the truth came late and barefoot, dragging ash from broken things. Someone swept the stage at morning. Someone changed the painted sky. But the floorboards kept the weight of everybody who had to die. [Chorus] Bodies under applause, hands in the air. hands in the air. Everybody saw. Nobody there. Curtain comes down. Red on the walls. We clap so loud we don’t hear the fall. [Bridge] Tell me what the theater wanted. Tell me what the blood was for. Tell me why the crowd feels holy when it walks out through the door. Tell me who gets called a hero. Tell me who gets called insane. Tell me why we love the thunder more than who it leaves in pain. Then leave one candle. Leave one chair. Leave one name inside the air. When the noise goes, when the velvet draws, count what’s still breathing under applause. [Final Chorus] Bodies under applause, hands in the air. Everybody saw. Nobody there. Curtain comes down. Red on the walls. flowers on the floor. All of us leaving, asking for more. Curtain comes down. Silence calls. The play ends here with bodies under applause. [Outro] Curtain down. Room cold. Everybody clapped. Nobody rose. [End]
