Someone Told Me...

V5.5

Someone Told Me... Someone told me clouds are cotton candy, But the birds don't take a bite. Someone told me stars are already gone, So who turns them on at night? Someone told me dogs can smell my worries, Should I hide them in my shoe? If the wind keeps stealing all the leaves, Does it borrow sweaters too? Someone told me... Maybe everything's pretending. Maybe everyone just knows. Maybe all the biggest answers Hide where nobody else goes. Someone told me teachers live at school. Do they dream behind the door? Do they paint the hallways after dark When no one's walking anymore? Someone told me fish don't ever blink. Maybe water closes first. Someone told me money doesn't grow. Did they ever try the dirt? Someone told me shadows copy people. Mine gets longer every day. Maybe when I'm finally fast asleep, It quietly runs away. Maybe the moon follows our little car Because it likes the way we sing. Maybe every broken toy at home Still believes it's king. Maybe trees are gossiping with birds. Maybe sidewalks learn our names. Maybe puddles keep the upside-down So the sky can visit rain. Someone told me grown-ups know it all. Then why do they lose their keys? Why do they stand looking in the fridge Like they're waiting for a breeze? Someone told me wishes won't come true If I tell them out aloud. So if nobody has heard mine yet, Why's my heart so very loud? Someone told me every ending's sad. I don't think that can be right. Sometimes bedtime means tomorrow's close, Hidden underneath goodnight. Maybe all the answers grow too big For little hands to hold. Maybe questions keep us warm When everything feels cold. Maybe if I learn the whole wide world I'll still miss something small. Like counting freckles in the dark Or listening through the wall. Someone told me one day I'll know everything. But if that's true... Will I stop asking?
