The Forgotten Mark

[Intro] [Clean guitar, sparse piano] [Verse 1] Three in the morning. Books across the floor. I've checked the royal archives twice already, maybe more. The rubbing from the chamber is hanging by my desk. Seven circles joined together. One of them defaced. I thought I'd find an answer buried somewhere in the stacks. Instead I found an empty space where somepony cut the binding back. Not torn. Not lost. Removed. And now I can't let go. [Pre-Chorus] One missing page is nothing. Two could still be chance. But every road I follow ends in somepony's hoofprints. [Chorus] Who forgot the forgotten mark? Who decided it should disappear? You don't carve a truth from stone because you're scared nopony will hear. There's a hole inside our history. I can trace it through the dark. Somepony didn't lose the seventh. Somepony forgot the mark. [Verse 2] I found an older textbook from before the castle fell. The chapter numbers jump from eight straight to number ten. An illustration shows the Elements, but the parchment doesn't lie. There's room beside the other six. You can see the faded line. Another book says Harmony was "made complete" long ago. Complete by what? The next three pages are missing from the scroll. Spike told me I should get some sleep. I told him, "Soon. I swear." Then I found the same scratched symbol in a book from Starswirl's era. [Pre-Chorus] Different ink. Different hoof. Different century and name. But every time I find that symbol, somepony did the same. [Chorus] Who forgot the forgotten mark? Who decided it should disappear? You don't carve a truth from stone because you're scared nopony will hear. There's a hole inside our history. I can trace it through the dark. Somepony didn't lose the seventh. Somepony forgot the mark. [Instrumental] [Heavy, tense guitar] [Verse 3] A knock came from the balcony. Not the door. I knew before I turned around who'd come to see me now. Luna stepped in from the moonlight. Didn't smile or say hello. Then she saw the rubbing on my table... and every bit of color left her face. I asked her, "Have you seen this?" She stared a little while. Then quietly pulled the curtains shut and told me to sit down. [Bridge] [Sparse, intimate] "Luna... what is it?" Silence. "Twilight, where did you find this?" "Under the old castle." Another silence. Longer. I pushed the rubbing toward her. "If you know something, please don't make me dig for it." She closed her eyes. Then said— "Will." [Heavy guitars enter] [Final Chorus] They didn't forget the forgotten mark. They made damn sure it disappeared. They cut it out of stone and paper, buried every trace for years. There's a wound inside our history, and Luna knows where it starts. Somepony didn't lose the seventh. Somepony feared the forgotten mark. [Outro] [Low guitar, quiet vocal] "Will?" Luna wouldn't look at me. "What kind of Element is Will?" Four notes came through the floorboards. And Luna whispered— "One we should have understood."
