[Verse 1] Rolled in on fumes To the county line One gas pump blinking Like it changed its mind Main street sleeping In the afternoon heat My boots hit the sidewalk No one on the street [Pre-Chorus] I checked the glass I shook the door Every sign said "soon" But I'd seen that before [Chorus] Early closing day Early closing day I came too far To be turned away Early closing day Early closing day One small town And nothing's open today (nothing's open today) [Verse 2] The diner chairs were up On the sticky floor A paper on the door Said "back tomorrow" The hardware man Locked the last chain down tight Even the drugstore shade Was pulled against the light [Pre-Chorus] I had a hungry grin And a pocket full of change But every place in town Was playing the same game [Chorus] Early closing day Early closing day I came too far To be turned away Early closing day Early closing day One small town And nothing's open today (nothing's open today) [Bridge] So I sat by the feed store Kicked gravel slow Watched a tumbleweed Cross the crosswalk road Guess the whole town Got the same old tune Shut it all down Before the afternoon [Chorus] Early closing day Early closing day I came too far To be turned away Early closing day Early closing day One small town And nothing's open today (nothing's open today) [Outro] No coffee No wrench No supper plate Just me and the sun And early closing day (early closing day)
