The Media Studies Song

Welcome to the matrix, the world of the screen, Where nothing is ever exactly as it’s seen. Media Studies isn't "watching TV for a grade," It’s deconstructing how the whole illusion is made. It’s the "Language," the "Industry," the "Audience" too, And the "Representation" of the world and of you. Don't just be a consumer, a ghost in the ghost, Be the one who can see through the "Viral" and "Post." Let’s start with the Media Language, the "Codes" of the craft, The "Visual" and "Audio" and the "Technical" draft. The Mise-en-scene—every prop in the frame, Telling a story without even a name. The Camera Angles—the "High" and the "Low," Deciding who’s powerful and who’s running the show. Is it a Close-up for emotion or a Wide for the space? Every choice is a "Signifier" all over the place. Now look at the Representation, the "Mirror" and "Lens," How the media builds up or breaks down your friends. Is it a Stereotype, a lazy "Short-cut" in the head? Or a complex reality that’s being spread? Whose voice is the loudest? Who’s left in the dark? Whose "Identity" is used to hit a specific mark? It’s about Ideology, the "Values" and "Truths," Targeting the elders or the "Rebellious" youths. Then there’s the Industry, the "Money" and "Power," The giant corporations that bloom and they flower. Is it a Conglomerate like Disney or Sony? Using Vertical Integration to keep out the phoney? They own the production, the cinema, the site, Controlling the content with a "Monopoly" bite. Check the Regulation, the O-F-C-O-M rule, Keeping the airwaves from becoming too cruel. Now talk 'bout the Audience, the "Target" and "Reach," The people the media is trying to teach. Are you "Passive"—just sitting and taking it in? Or "Active"—deciding where the "Meaning" should begin? Use the Uses and Gratifications to find out the "Why," Do you watch for "Escapism" or the "Social" tie? Do you use it for "Identity" or "Information" and "Fact"? The audience is the power in the "Interactive" act. Finally, the Context, the "Social" and "Time," How a "Classic" from the past looks like a modern-day crime. The Historical shifts and the Cultural change, Making the "Old School" adverts look incredibly strange. From the newspapers' "Ink" to the "Algorithm" stream, Media is the fabric of the collective dream. So keep your eyes open and analyze the "Hype," Because you’re not just a "Target"—you’re a different type.
