I arrived in a town... where everyone had suddenly become a storyteller. Naturally... I felt threatened. [Verse 1] The mayor found the marketplace he'd walked right past for years. He shook the blacksmith's sooty hand and asked about his fears. A lord I'd never seen before was drinking farmer's ale. He called the brewer "dear old friend." The brewer whispered, "Who the hell?" [Pre-Chorus] New ribbons on the lampposts Fresh promises on walls Funny how they mend the road When autumn starts to call [Chorus] Oh, what a fine season for storytellers Every corner has a few They promise wider bridges Before they've measured two They'll fix the mill by Monday Make Tuesday twice as long And I thought I made things up... Gentlemen, I've been doing it all wrong! [Instrumental: playful fiddle and whistle] [Verse 2] One promised cheaper barrels One promised larger bread One swore every village goose Would have its featherbed Another climbed a wooden crate And promised cleaner rain I nearly hired the fellow. That's a promising claim. Then three men claimed the broken bridge Was first upon their list. It's been "first" for twenty-seven years. Impressive how it's missed. [Chorus] Oh, what a fine season for storytellers Every doorway has a few They promise straighter rivers for a copper or two They'll fix the mill by Monday Make Tuesday twice as long And I thought I made things up... Gentlemen, I've been doing it all wrong! [Verse 3] Then came the night of choosing And every bell was rung The speeches stopped at sunset The final songs were sung Next morning all the ribbons Were coming from the square The blacksmith looked around and asked, "Where's my dear old friend?" I packed my lute and laughed a bit Then took the eastern track For unlike certain storytellers, I name a day. Then come back. [Bridge: music drops to lute and voice] [Spoken] Now don't misunderstand me. A promise can be perfectly true. I make them myself. For example... I promise this next verse will be completely accurate. [Short pause] [Spoken] There is no next verse. [Final Chorus: full folk ensemble, laughing harmonies] Oh, what a fine season for storytellers Raise a mug to every one For turning little potholes Into battles to be won May every bridge grow wider May every purse grow strong And should they need a proper liar... Tell them Finnan's moving on! [Outro: fiddle flourish] [Spoken] Amateurs. Charming, though.
