------------ Olena Teliha (1906–1942) was a Ukrainian poet and public figure, executed at Babyn Yar. Her poetry is always about tension, choice, and inner freedom. The poem “All — but not this!” is a protest against calm, colorless existence. It expresses a rejection of indifference and a longing for genuine feeling. It is a text about strength of spirit and a refusal to live “halfway.” ------------ All — but not this! Not these quiet days, Where every word is cast in the same hues, Where thoughts are like unkindled, smothered flames, And desires lie in dusty chains. Some wind, some laughter, even rage — give me that! Let souls break through their rusted bars, Let someone cry: hate and love! — And life or death will then be worth it. Fear not the days tied up in tangled knots, Nor sleepless nights, nor dizzy, fevered mornings. Let time carve up your face with good and evil! Let even the smallest wounds set your heart ablaze! Do not retreat into the shadows. Endure the searing game. Do not fear to gaze into the blinding light — Only after heat will the long-awaited thunder strike, And from the clouds will slide — like a bayonet — the lightning.
