Shariputra, form (rupa) is no different from emptiness (sunyata), and emptiness is no different from form. Form is emptiness, and emptiness is form. Likewise, sensation, perception, mental formations, and consciousness are also emptiness. Sariputta, all phenomena are characterized by emptiness; they neither arise nor cease, are neither impure nor pure, and neither increase nor decrease. Therefore, in emptiness, there exist no forms, no sensations, representations, formations, or discriminations. There are also no eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, or mind. There are no objects of these sense organs such as forms, sounds, scents, tastes, touchables, or mental objects. There are no eighteen realms from the eye as a category to consciousness. There are no states of wisdom, nor can a state of wisdom cease. There is neither aging and death, nor can aging and death cease. There are no Four Noble Truths of suffering, the cause of suffering, the cessation of suffering, or the path leading to the cessation of suffering. There is not knowing, nor is there obtaining. It is because there is nothing to gain that the bodhisattva relies on the perfection of wisdom; the mind is free from obstacles, and because there are no obstacles in the mind, there is also no fear. By transcending erroneous thoughts and fantasies, one realizes nirvana. Furthermore, all past, present, and future buddhas attain the supreme and perfect enlightenment by also relying on the perfection of wisdom. That is why it should be known. The Heart Sutra is a great mantra, the mantra of great wisdom and enlightenment, the supreme mantra, incomparable and wonderful beyond measure. It perfectly removes all sufferings and is indeed real, not empty. That is why I will now expound the mantra that praises Prajnaparamita here. O travelers, O travelers, those who can go to the other shore, may you find enlightenment and happiness. The Essence Sutra on the Completion of Great Wisdom.
