The Last Dinner Outside - tightened

VERSE 1 Someone grabbed the sweaters, candles burning low The sun turned everything to gold, then let it go We set the table just the way we always do Kids laughing loud, a spilled drink or two Nobody called it the last one of the year That's not a thing you notice till it's clear VERSE 2 You passed the bread and held my eyes a while The air was turning cold enough to smile It was the kind of evening you hold on tight Then fold away and save for a colder night I watched the way you loved this life we'd made Like something you wanted never to fade PRE-CHORUS We never know it's the last one That's the cruel and simple truth The beautiful ones slip past us We don't see them till they're through So stay Stay a little longer Stay CHORUS One more dinner outside The candles burning low One more night before the cold Says it's time to go Pull your chair in close to mine Let's not rush this goodbye One more dinner outside with you Just one more night, just you and I VERSE 3 We cleared the plates but stayed there, in no rush The fire unlit, but nobody cared Someone found a constellation, told us "hush" We tipped our heads back and just stared That was the last one, though we didn't know Not till the frost came to tell us so I still go back to that October night The spilled drink, the bread, the last of the light (pre-chorus and chorus repeat) BRIDGE (barely above a whisper) If I could go back, I'd go back there Sit down again in that same old chair Leave my phone, let dinner move slow Just breathe in that October glow I'd study every face around the light I'd memorize the way it fell that night I'd hold your hand and never let it go I'd stay until there was nothing left to know But we didn't know We never do So all that I can do now Is stay — every time, with you FINAL CHORUS One more dinner outside The candles burning low One more night before the cold Says it's time to go Pull your chair in close to mine Let's not rush this goodbye (tag, achingly slow) One more dinner outside with you Just one more night like this Stay Just stay
