To experience the full story, I invite you to begin with Part I. The other chapters can be found in the playlist Evermore – The Contemporary Aria. This story is a work of fiction. —————————————————— The familiar lakeside. Warm afternoon light settles gently across the lake. A quiet bench rests beside the water. The Heroine and the Male Lead are already seated together, while a wheelchair stands nearby. Snatches of conversation mingle with the afternoon breeze, the lapping water along the shore, and distant birdsong. (His eyes drift briefly toward the cast on the Heroine’s left knee as their conversation continues.) *Male Lead: So… How did you tell your brother? *Heroine: I told him… Do you really think I’m some kind of mountain climber? *Male Lead: Well, you used to be a swimming champion… *Heroine: But have you ever seen a fish that climbs trees or mountains? (The Male Lead lets out a brief, warm chuckle, unable to help himself.) *Heroine: Tell me the truth… Have you ever dreamed of this place before? (The Male Lead meets her eyes. Slowly, he reaches for her hand and places it gently against his chest.) *Male Lead: You know… Whether it was this lake… or another… I’ve been dreaming… of being with you… every single day. I don’t need the dream to tell me what my heart has always known. I don’t need the dream to explain what my heart has already chosen. Do you see those swans upon the water? Some mornings I imagined nothing more than this. A bench. The wind. Your hand finding mine. There were mornings that almost became the day. There were words that almost found a voice. Yet life kept turning its quiet pages, until they quietly became this day. It was never the distant light. Only the moment… I knew. You had been beside me all along. Perhaps… had I found you a little sooner… this day might have found us sooner. But when I look at you now… I don’t see what was wounded. I see you. If the dream was only there to lead you here… then let it rest. Don’t keep asking the water. Look at me. I’m here. Don’t ask the dream to speak again. I’m holding your hand now. Perhaps… this has always been the answer. Take my hand. Not to follow what was. But to begin what is. With me. *Heroine: I’m here… I’m with you… *Together: No dream could ever become more real than this. No yesterday could speak more softly than now. Whatever road lies beyond the water… we’ll follow side by side. Evermore. ————————————————— Afterword When I first began writing Evermore, I never imagined the journey would become this long—or this layered. What began as an artistic exploration gradually found itself touched by life beyond the page. As the story unfolded, moments from the real world quietly found their way into its imagery, emotions, and reflections. Through it all, I did my best to remain faithful to the reason I began writing in the first place: to create something guided by art, literature, and honest human feeling. Looking back today, I’m grateful for where Evermore has arrived. Like any creative work, there are still small details I may continue refining in the future, primarily its presentation and libretto formatting, so that it more closely reflects the form of a contemporary opera. The story itself and the lyrics you have followed will remain unchanged. The ending of The Quiet Answer was never chosen simply because a happy ending is comforting. Along the way, I wrestled with many possible paths for these characters, and the story often surprised even me. Looking back now, this ending feels both inevitable and unexpected. Whether such endings are common in real life is another question entirely. But within the world of Evermore, this feels like the place where the story was always meant to arrive. Even so, I believe it remains an open ending. What lies beyond the lake, beyond that final song, is no longer mine alone to imagine. Thank you for walking this journey with me. Your encouragement, kindness, and unwavering support have carried me farther than I could ever have gone alone. Every listen, every message, and every thoughtful conversation became part of this journey, too. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. — Rachel —————————————————— These lyrics were written and are owned by Rachel’s Original (Rachel Liu).
