The scroll unrolls that very night; the wind sweeps through the ancient stage, Flickering shadows of dim lights sway, holding the grief of an unfinished age. Who inscribed a name upon the back of yellowed, fragile page? Who left a vow to faded springs and autumns left to cage? I have waited far too long within this painting's frame, Waiting for a tryst where no one comes, a ghost without a name. Sandalwood incense burns to ash, the gongs and drums awake, Front stage and back, it's all farewells for parting's bitter sake. Fate lifts the brush and sweeps it light, a casual, easy stroke, And paints your path and mine into a final, silent yoke. I waken from the ink-dark depths, yet cannot leave your eyes, A thousand years of water sleeves, choked words and heavy sighs. If this mortal realm's a dream of plays, who breaks karmic wheels? I sing out every joy and woe that human sorrow feels, Yet you just turn and walk away, leaving the story still. One fold of opera, a lifetime's wrong, Half a scroll of painting, wasted years gone. Looking back suddenly, the lamplights fade and drop, Turns out meeting was just passing by, a sudden stop. Fine rain taps on tiles outside, like someone softly greets, Actors on stage change their paint, empty are the seats. I tuck away the tenderness of days that used to be, Letting the wind flip through the scroll, scattering love from me. Turns out what is hardest to let go of in the end, Isn't you, but my own obsession, broken like a bend. Silk and bamboo music fades, candles gutter out, Empty costumes covered deep in dust, without a doubt. If there is a next life, can we rewrite this script anew, This unfinished depth of love, where no one sees it through? Ink marks are not yet dry, you have walked far away, Mountains and rivers span ahead, where no one waits today. I fold my remaining years into a light and drifting boat, Setting it adrift upon the day you left me to float. I waken from the ink-dark depths, finally learning how to let go, A thousand years of water sleeves, no longer waiting for the show. If this mortal realm's an empty dream, I clung to it for you, When the final gong sounds fade into the distant view, I return myself back to the rivers and the mountains, true. Wind tears open the yellowed scroll, Ink fades away, the stage grows bare and whole, Only a solitary, ancient gong echoes in the deep, The painting's soul vanishes with the night's sleep.
