North Bluff Nightbird

Well, I met her by the bait shop, quarter past nine, She smelled like bonfire smoke and a squeeze of cheap wine. She winked at me once, and my heart took flight— ’Til she said, “Boy, I only come out at night.” She’s my North Bluff Nightbird, feathered and free, Howlin’ at the moon from the spruce-top tree. If you hear her laughin’, don’t you be scared— Every town’s got a Nightbird, ours just ain’t compared! She tap-danced on the boardwalk, boots two sizes wrong, Hummed a tune so crooked it became my favorite song. Tried to kiss me once but missed by a mile— Said, “Sorry, Jack! My aim’s been bad awhile!” She’s my North Bluff Nightbird, wild as the tides, Lives on chowder, cornbread, and questionable rides. If you see her swoopin’, give her a wave— She’s the only Nightbird Halcyon Bluff could save! I took her to the Tavern, bought her fries and beer, She told the barkeep secrets I still ain’t wanna hear. Then danced on the table ’til the whole joint cheered— Fell off twice, but that’s why we love her ’round here. She’s my North Bluff Nightbird, queen of the bluff, Laughs like a kettle when the boil gets rough. If she’s in your headlights, don’t hit the brakes— She just likes attention and dramatic mistakes! Now folks say she’s trouble— and they’re right, I suppose. But trouble looks sweeter in cold night air and old clothes. Now every cold evening when the lake fog rolls thin, I hear her hootin’ from the woods by Svensson’s Inn. And if you’re up late, you might catch her flight— Just follow the laughter into the night! Oh, my North Bluff Nightbird, crazy and kind, She’ll steal your wallet and your peace of mind. But you’ll miss her singing when dawn turns gray— Our Nightbird’s the heart of the Bluff, anyway!
