One More Lap

V6

[Intro, spoken, close] Hold up. Can we walk a little? [Verse 1, restrained narrative rap] Came out for a run, you brought a whole crowd, Names I couldn't catch, everybody talking loud. I had somewhere else to be before we even started, Halfway through a sentence, checking where my watch was. You cracked a joke, I missed it, asked you what you said, By then we were laughing at the question instead. For once I had no plan for where the evening went, Nobody needed anything I had to represent. Later in my notes, I wrote how lucky I had been, To find somebody I could call a friend like him. Funny how the page got the part I meant for you, Next time we met, I asked what you were up to. [Hook, half-spoken, fragile melody] Can we take one more lap? There's something I should say. I've already caught my breath, Still can't get the words in place. [Verse 2, rising urgency, internal rhymes] I can talk about a future till the morning turns to noon, Rearrange a whole idea in the middle of a room. But a simple "glad I know you" gets revised until it's gone, I rehearse it, then reverse it, then I tell you to jog on. Nothing happened. You're still here. That's why I'm writing this, Why should something have to happen for me to admit That your name inside my phone means more than I let show? I don't want a leaving party just to tell you what you know. All that feeling in my chest comes out as "take it easy, man," Like I mailed myself a letter, kept the envelope in hand. I've learned a lot of things; this one's taking me a while: Let a friend know that he matters while he's standing by my side. [Hook, firmer, drums widen] Can we take one more lap? There's something I should say. I've already caught my breath, Still can't get the words in place. [Bridge, drums drop, unguarded spoken rap] I'm glad I know you. There. You can laugh now if you want. I keep making it a speech, then forgetting what it's for. You don't owe me some reply that makes the whole thing fit, We can stand here being awkward for a minute. That's it. Then talk about the weather, what we're eating, any of it. I just wanted you to hear it from me before I hid it. [Final hook, quiet, almost no drums] Can we take one more lap? I finally found a way. We've already crossed the line, I just wasn't ready to leave yet. [Outro, spoken] Yeah. One more.
