The crowd changes masks and disguises, Forgetting conscience, locking the door, Greedily buying titles and prizes, A bottomless cup of inner loss. Why do they cloak deceit as craft? — Why? Why hide the answers in the shadow of the question? — Why? They’ll burn the whole world to the ground, no doubt! Alas, the blind man sees no further than his nose! — Alas! Wild dog, barefoot sage… Wild dog, barefoot sage… In a shabby barrel, a streetwise hermit, He cast away all falsehood and pretense. In people’s eyes, he’s just a loafer, Who stings the day and night with every word. The mob cries out: “A ragged fool!” Who shatters the prison of their shallow mind, A laughingstock, a beggar, bold and cruel? Behold, ye serfs—the proud Diogenes! Under the bright sun of market windows, Through the bitter poison of this mad century, Defying the arrogance of men who swagger, Among the crowd, he’s searching for a human soul. Why does he carry a lantern in his hand? — Why? Why with a bite of sarcasm laced in every word? — Why? He knows for sure he’ll never find what he seeks! Alas, the ignorant will never grasp the jest! — Alas! Wild dog, barefoot sage… Wild dog, barefoot sage… He never asked for palaces or glory, For sharp wit and a daring, fearless gaze. Though he once met the King of Kings, His answer was humble, stripped of praise: Why would I need your grand display? — Why? Your posture blocks the sun from my view! Why crave the blinding glitter of wealth today? — Why? Thus Diogenes taught the king the truth anew. Wild dog, barefoot sage… Wild dog, barefoot sage…
