Rübezahl is the famous mountain spirit of the Giant Mountains, whose legend dates back to the 16th century. Besides “Rübezahl,” he is known as “Krakonoš” (Czech) and “Liczyrzepa” (Polish). The legend tells that he kidnapped Princess Emma and comforted her with magical turnips that made her companions appear. To return home, she tricked him into counting all the turnips—this gave her time to escape. Rübezahl appears as a giant, dwarf, or monk, plays pranks, but often helps the poor as well. He is the moody, mighty “Lord of the Mountains,” both feared and respected, and his different names reflect the multicultural heritage of the Giant Mountains. 🔷🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔶 [Intro ] Deep in Giant Mountains, where old stones dream deep, A spirit wanders, secrets he will keep. Krakonoš they whisper, Liczyrzepa too, But Rübezahl’s the name the wild winds blew. [Verse 1 ] Lord of thunder, avalanche's frozen fang, Mist he weaves, 'til cracking stones give way, Weather-king eternal, where shadows play. Now a monk in grey, now raven on the gale, A thousand faces in the mountain's tale. [Chorus] Rübezahl, you mountain spirit, Your shadow dances on the moonlit snow, Kind but wild and merciless, Master where the icy tempests blow. Honor him and earn his favor, Mock him and feel the mountain’s woe. [Verse 2] He breaks the chains, the wretched find release, Turns fool's gold to dust, grants weary souls their peace. He walks as pilgrim, knocks upon your door, Weighs your heart – the truth it can't ignore. Judge beyond the saints in gilded frame, He sees your soul, untouched by mortal shame. [Chorus] Rübezahl, you mountain spirit, Your shadow dances on the moonlit snow, Kind but wild and merciless, Master where the icy tempests blow. [Bridge | spoken Words] Once he loved fair Emma by the stream, Her laughter echoes, a half-forgotten dream. He carved her roses from the mountain stone, Now only hears the wind's lamenting moan. [Verse 3 ] Mock his name, and storms will tear the ground, Hail and thunder, vengeance all around. He guards the wild since dawn on ancient stone, Keeper of the balance – forever on his throne. [Final Chorus | female Vocals and | powerful male choir] Rübezahl, you ancient spirit, Guardian where the cold winds flow. Valley people, heed the ancient lore – He still walks where moonfires glow. When the wind howls out his name in fright, Know the mountain watches through the night. [End]
