Treasures from a Different Time
The antique shop was old and dusty Filled with trinkets that were mostly a bore The owner hid a scar beneath the tattoo of a star But I felt I was meant to walk through his door Certain items stood out and pulled me Like a magnet on my very soul A floral scarf, an ivory knife, and a watch that caught the light When I touched them, they felt oddly cold At the counter, the old man looked skittish Asked me why I picked just those three From different corners and bins, out of all those dusty things My purchase had filled him with unease Something about the items intrigued me An energy yearning to escape At home, when I set them out, the bulb in my bedroom blew out And I could tell they had a story to trace The scarf called me with its threaded vines And its inlaid flowers made of polished beads That night it rose off my chair, fluttered and swayed in the air And a voice sang, like it had just been freed "My husband would take me dancing Whisking me 'round and side to side We couldn't afford expensive cars, but he made me fancy scarves He said this one brought out the fire in my eyes" "It used to be mine, a treasure from a different time But on that innocent day, it was taken away Along with the love of my life" The watch caught me with its shiny diamonds Arranged in a ring 'round its face But while they appeared to be fake, a handsome wrist they would make And tonight it rose to join the scarf in its dance "This watch was a gift from my brother To help me look like I was something in this world I'd wear it 'round town, a confident clown But lucky enough to catch the eye of one girl" "It used to be mine, a treasure from a different time But on that terrible day, it was taken away Along with the love of my life" The knife called me with its ivory handle A short blade with a switch installed That night I saw it dart past the watch and the scarf And stick with just its tip in the wall "I first saw the couple disappear down the alley With a third shadow creeping close behind As an ex-soldier, I knew what I had to do So I pulled my knife and ran to get there in time" "I saw him corner the couple with a club in his hand Demanding their jewels or their lives I surprised him with a slashing blade, but before the light did fade I heard three gunshots and dropped my knife" "It used to be mine, a treasure from a different time But on that foolish day, it was taken away Along with my brave, short life" Suddenly, I heard loud footsteps approaching And the shopkeeper's kick broke open my door The old man with the scar stood with a pistol drawn And fierce eyes he had hidden before He saw the watch and scarf dancing in their sweet, playful arcs Said he was taking them back once more But when he grabbed them floating there, his hands were frozen in the air A look of panic overtaking his face And as I dashed down the hall, I heard a rattle from the wall and the knife came rushing back toward him with pace "Life used to be mine A treasure from a different time Now there's justice for the man Who shot us down with his hand For fake jewels that nonetheless shined" "Now our treasures are each other, and we will leave the world in peace We can move tonight, toward that brighter light Our souls finally at ease"
