Tethered (The Weight of the Light)

V6

[Staging Note: The stage is split. On one side, the shadowy memory of Valerius lingering in the street fog. On the other, Elara's cramped, brightly lit family parlor. She has just sneaked back inside and is preparing medicine for her sleeping sister, clearly exhausted by her brief rebellion and the crushing reality of her life.] [Intro] [Music begins sparse. A slow, weeping cello and a solitary piano. The mood is melancholic and heavy.] [Verse 1] [Female Vocals - Elara (Soprano/Alto)] (Singing softly, looking at her sleeping sister) The kettle screams, the fever breaks, Another midnight of familiar aches. I smooth the blankets, I force a smile, And say we’re going to be fine a while. I wash the dishes, I sweep the floor, But I keep looking at the heavy door. [Chorus] [Drums kick in—a slow, steady, heartbeat rhythm. Bass swells. A Gothic rock ballad feel begins to build.] [Female Vocals - Elara] I am tethered to the ground By the people that I love. I am anchored to the dirt While the moon is free above. It’s a beautiful, heavy chain I wear Woven out of love and fear and care. I wouldn't trade it, I wouldn't dare... [Male Vocals - Valerius (Baritone)] (A ghostly, seductive echo from the shadows of the stage) ...But you are so tired of the glare. [Female Vocals - Elara] (A pained whisper) God, I am so tired of the glare. [Verse 2] [The tempo picks up slightly. Distorted guitars begin to hum quietly in the background.] [Female Vocals - Elara] He stood in shadows, he promised rest. No beating heart inside a fragile chest. He said the clock is just a thief in white And offered me a never-ending night. No medicine, no tears, no bills to pay... Just let the mortal burdens wash away. [Chorus] [Louder this time. Guitars crunch, the rhythm section drives hard.] [Female Vocals - Elara] I am tethered to the ground By the people that I love! I am anchored to the dirt While the moon is free above! [Male Vocals - Valerius] (Harmonizing powerfully from the dark) Break the heavy chain you wear! Leave behind the fear and care! [Female Vocals - Elara] I wouldn't trade it, I wouldn't dare... But God, I am so tired of the glare! [Bridge] [Full Gothic Rock explosion. Heavy distortion, crashing cymbals. Elara's vocals become soaring and desperate, fighting against Valerius's pull.] [Female Vocals - Elara] Is it a sin to want to close my eyes?! To turn my back on all the morning skies?! If I let go, if I just slip away, Would I be a monster in the light of day? [Male Vocals - Valerius] (Commanding, cutting through the heavy rock instrumentation) I do not hurt! I do not bleed! I do not have a single mouth to feed! [Female Vocals - Elara] (Screaming over the music) He doesn't have a single mouth to feed! [Outro] [The heavy instruments drop out instantly. Just the weeping cello remains, long and mournful.] [Female Vocals - Elara] (Breathing heavily, regaining her composure. She picks up a teacup.) I pour the water. I check the time. I leave the shadows of the street behind. I am tethered...(She carries the teacup into the next room, looking back at the door one last time) ...and I am fine. [Fade out on a single, unresolved piano note.]
