He sits up on his wooden throne Tellin’ lies left and right Nothin’ you can believe in Knowin’ he’ll be there all night Says he’s done everything That there is to do The only thing we ever seen Is him drowning in brew He lives for the dark light Of smoke filled saloons Buying strangers drinks For some ear to chew Braggin’ on a good life The one he never lived They just sit and nod No attention to give Tellin’ lies from the barstool Being everybody’s fool Thinkin’ they’re believin’ All he says is true And he’ll never realize That we see truth in his eyes He’ll be lying from the barstool Till the day he dies Sometimes late at night When the last call rings in The smile runs from his eyes And he’s lost that liars grin You can see the troubled man Livin’ deep down inside We can only wonder How often he has cried Tellin’ lies from the barstool Being everybody’s fool Thinkin’ they’re believin’ All he says is true And he’ll never realize That we see truth in his eyes He’ll be lying from the barstool Till the day he dies Sometimes a story’s cheaper Than the pain he’s tryin’ to hide So he keeps on spinnin’ tales ’Cause the truth cuts deep inside If he ever spoke it plain Lord, he’d break right where he stands So he hides behind the whiskey ’Cause it’s the only thing that understands Tellin’ lies from the barstool Being everybody’s fool Thinkin’ they’re believin’ All he says is true And he’ll never realize That we see truth in his eyes He’ll be lying from the barstool Till the day he dies So we tip our hats and leave him On that barstool throne of lies Just a lonely king of nothin’ With regret behind his eyes And the neon keeps on flicker’n As another good night dies He’ll be lyin’ from the barstool Till the day he says goodbye
