The answer vanished in a blink, turning to smoke Last year, weaving through the crowd, I clutched your wrist tightly The hem of your yukata and the ramune bottle Clattered as they rolled us along Drowning at the shallow water’s edge, I assumed I knew the depth of your soul. I didn’t realize back then that silence, too, is a form of speech. Like a sound that arrives late, kindness is something you only understand in hindsight. In a story with no winners or losers, I was the only one who raised my fist. Someone shouts in the distance, and this room alone sinks to the bottom of the water. What did you swallow that night? The words I can’t ask for are still warm. Instead of spouting clever lines, I should have just sat beside you and waited for you to speak. Now I’m more eloquent than I was back then; I see myself—the one who’s stopped making excuses. Listening to the sounds that come too late, tonight I blame the summer. I paint the clue to why I lost you in a color that suits me best. After the last spark has faded, I can see the night beyond the smoke. Was this really okay for us? With no answer, we head toward tomorrow.
